To catch up on a study plan, list the unfinished tasks, estimate the hours they need and compare that backlog with your genuinely spare time before the exam. Move only the work that fits. If it does not fit, reduce or replace lower-priority work instead of repeatedly promising to do everything tomorrow.

Measure the backlog in tasks and hours
“Three days behind” does not tell you what to do next. Write down what those days contained. Separate an unfinished lecture, an unattempted problem set and a review you skipped. Estimate the remaining work, not the full original task if part is already complete.

These estimates are illustrative. Time one representative task if you are uncertain. Counting 60 unanswered questions as “one task” can hide much more work than one hour of revision.
Calculate spare capacity before moving tasks
Suppose four weeks remain and you can study 12 hours each week. That gives 48 hours. Your existing plan already needs 40 hours, so you have eight spare hours, not 48.
Spare capacity = remaining available hours − already committed study hours.
The 18-hour backlog exceeds those eight spare hours by ten hours. No scheduling method removes that gap. You can gain time, move a flexible deadline, reduce task scope or replace lower-value work already in the schedule. For a fixed exam date, deadline changes may not be possible.
Triage before you reschedule
For the example above, remove the three-hour note rewrite if it adds little. That still leaves a 15-hour backlog. Fit eight hours into genuine spare capacity and identify seven hours of lower-priority planned work to replace. If you cannot justify those replacements, acknowledge that full coverage is unlikely under the current constraints.
Choose priorities using the current official syllabus, topic dependencies and your own mistakes. Do not assume a popular “high-weightage” list guarantees which questions will appear. Keep a record of deferred topics so they remain a deliberate decision rather than disappearing from view.

The remaining seven hours in the example require explicitly replacing other scheduled tasks. Label those substitutions in your calendar. Do not show the full old schedule and the catch-up schedule as if both can fit.
Keep the next session small enough to start
Choose a task with an observable finish: “attempt ten questions and review the wrong answers” instead of “catch up on reasoning.” At the end, write the actual time. If your estimate was optimistic, update the recovery plan immediately.

What if the exam is next week?
Use the same calculation with the days actually left. Prioritise questions and material you can meaningfully review, and list what will remain unfinished. Avoid a last-minute schedule that depends on giving up all rest or completing unfamiliar topics at an unrealistic rate.
