Section status and reporting rules are set by ACT and have changed in recent years, so confirm the current arrangement for your test date on the official ACT site and check what the colleges on your list ask for.
Should you take the Science section at all?
Take it if any program on your list asks for it, if you are applying to science, engineering, nursing or other STEM pathways where a STEM score is read, or if Science is one of your stronger sections and you want another strong number on the report. The mistake most students make is using one method for all three. Conflicting Viewpoints punishes figure-skimming because there are usually no figures to skim, and Data Representation punishes careful full-text reading because the text is mostly setup you do not need.
How much time do I get per passage?
One minute per question on average, which you should convert into a per-passage budget rather than tracking question by question. Forms vary in how many passages they use, so build your budget from the form in front of you.

These are sample allocations to adapt to your own speed. The rule that matters is the deficit rule: if a passage runs more than 90 seconds past its budget, answer the remaining questions on your best reading and move on. One over-run passage can cost you an entire later passage, and the questions you never reach are guaranteed losses while the ones you rush are not.
Count your passages in the first fifteen seconds and set two checkpoints: roughly half your passages done by the 20-minute mark, and the last passage started with its full budget remaining.
How do I use the figures-first method?
For Data Representation and Research Summaries, spend 30 to 45 seconds orienting yourself in the figures before you read a question. Work through this sequence every time:
- Read every axis label and every column heading, including the units. Most misread answers come from missing a unit or a scale change.
- Note the direction of each relationship. Write a small up or down arrow beside each trend: as X increases, Y increases or decreases.
- Find what differs between figures or experiments. In Research Summaries, name the one variable that changed from Experiment 1 to Experiment 2. That single sentence answers a surprising share of the questions.
- Look for the outlier or the crossing point. Tests love the place where two lines cross or where a trend reverses.
- Only now read the first question, and go back into the text only when a question names a term you cannot resolve from the figures.
- Answer with your finger on the data point. If you cannot point to where the answer lives, you are guessing from memory.
For Conflicting Viewpoints, invert the method. Read the introduction carefully, then each viewpoint in turn, and after each one write a four-word summary of its core claim. Questions then split cleanly into what one position says, what both share and what evidence would strengthen or weaken a position.
Which question types cost students the most points?
Three recur across almost every error log:
- Two-figure combination questions. You must read a value from one figure and carry it into another. The error is usually reading the right value off the wrong figure.
- Extrapolation beyond the plotted range. The answer requires continuing a trend past the last data point, and students hunt for a printed value that does not exist.
- Conflicting Viewpoints agreement questions. Asking what both scientists accept, rather than where they differ, catches anyone who only encoded the disagreement.
There is also a small set of questions that assume introductory background: density, pH, the structure of a cell, basic physics relationships. You cannot study your way around all of them in four weeks, and you should not try. Get the data-reading questions right first.
